  • 1-2 hours per week

Main Duties

Specialist Study Skills Tutor
Pay - £36.00/hour

  • To provide generic study support outwith the classroom for an agreed number of hours to provide a range of study skills assistance such as organising and planning and assessment preparation etc according to the student’s needs

  • To support students to develop learning strategies to assist them in overcoming difficulties encountered as a result of dyslexia, dyspraxia or other specific learning difficulties, or as a result of autism spectrum condition (ASC).

This may include helping with:

  • Literacy skills including spelling, grammar, comprehension and reading techniques

  • Computational and basic mathematical skills

  • Specialist Study skills techniques; including:

  • Mind mapping

  • Memory techniques

  • Concentration techniques

  • Note-taking techniques

  • Assignment planning and structure

  • Academic and essay writing skills

  • Research method skills

  • Referencing techniques

  • Effective reading and note taking

  • How to proofread

  • Revision techniques

  • Time management skills

  • Organisational skills

  • Stress management

  • The use of assistive technology, where appropriate

Essential Requirements

Education and Professional Qualifications

All Support Roles

  • Educated to SCQF9 Bachelor’s degree level or equivalent AND

  • Membership of one of the following professional bodies:

    - The Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS) - Full or associate membership
    - British Dyslexia Association (BDA) - Full professional membership
    - The Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education (ADSHE) - Professional membership
    - Dyslexia Guild -
    o Associate Member (ADG)
    o Associate Member (ADG FE/HE)
    o Member (MDG)

Previous Experience/Training

  • Experience in supporting students in post 16-year-old education with the development of learning strategies which will help to promote independent learning and encourage progression

Interpersonal Skills

  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to communicate with students on a one to one basis using exceptional interpersonal skills

  • An understanding of the responsibilities associated with maintaining confidentiality and an awareness of the requirements under data protection legislation

  • Understanding of the impact a disability or additional learning support need may have on participation in the FE/HE environment

Other Factors

All Support Roles

  • PVG membership or update required with HTS as countersignatory

  • Successful completion of mandatory Safeguarding Training and Suicide Awareness Training through HTS

Desirable

  • Experience in the development of learning plans which are appropriate to the needs of students in the higher education environment and which include the development of strategies and techniques to promote independent learning and progression

  • Experience and knowledge of additional support aids for students with specific learning difficulties including assistive technology

  • Experience of supporting students in higher education with the development of learning strategies and appropriate study techniques
